Blog of the Week by Elroy and Liona

Last term we learnt about the Tudor’s like Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn and their servants. This week went to Sutton House and learned Tudor songs and dances.

Tudor dancing and singing at Sutton House

Today Year 4 went on (another!)fantastic trip, this time to Sutton House. It was a great follow up to our work at All Hallows last month. We gave a tour of the house (using the amazing knowledge we have already from previous visits), before rehearsing a concert for the royal Anne Boleyn. In the afternoon some of us were lucky enough to dress up in Tudor costume, and we all took part in the concert with the songs and dances we had learnt in the morning session.

Making vocal music with Apollo 5

Today Year 4 went on a fantastic trip to the Gresham Centre in Central London to take part in a vocal music workshop with the incredible Apollo 5. Apollo 5 are a British a cappella group and they taught us how to make fantastic vocal music. Check out the photographs and video links below!

What did you enjoy most about the day?

Exploring our local area

This afternoon year 4 went out to explore the local area. We had great fun looking at features of the area and we did our own traffic survey on Kingsland Road too.

What did you notice on the walk?

When we returned to school we plotted our route on a street atlas and looked for other places we know and love using grid references.

In literacy we looked at fact and opinion and wrote our own facts and opinions about Hackney. We were inspired by this fantastic video showing East London from the air... check it out!

Next stop is India ... we will be travelling virtually of course!

Easter Homework

Year 4 have been given the following homework tasks for the Easter break:

Book Review
Spellings
Numeracy - Revision of topics we've been doing in class this term
Topic task - What I love about Hackney! This is in preparation for our geography based topic in the summer term, Incredible India. This should be completed in the yellow topic book.

Children have also been given a permission slip for our upcoming visit to the British Museum in May. Please return this to me asap.

In addition, I have assigned some homework tasks on Education City (www.educationcity.com). Each child has a username and password to login to Education City and access these tasks and many more. These particular tasks are optional at this stage - I would like to know how children get on with these, if they prefer doing homework in this way etc. I may then use it more often in the summer term, depending on feedback.

Have a fantastic Easter break!

Weekly Blog by Keeley and Mair

On Thursday 27th of March we met a poet called Joseph. He talked to us about a competition from discover and we wrote our own poems. We listened to music called the fun palace then we wrote down ideas.

Two days before we went on a trip to All Hallows Church and learnt about Tudor lifestyle. We used quills and we learnt how to write with them and we danced and sang a very old Tudor song.

We have been learning the vertical method and playing a game to go with it.

Numeracy - Adding with the expanded vertical method

This week we have been moving towards using the column method to add numbers.

We have used the expanded vertical method. This means that we write out the numbers vertically, before adding the units, then the tens, and finally any hundreds (or even thousands). We then find the total.

Take a look at the examples below and the link to Kitty and Mair's work on Youtube!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuTh3pUP8A0

You can see that they have forgot to include one of the hundreds, but luckily they remember before finding the total!

Here is Rebecca's example:

Blog of the Week by Kade and Salim

Matt Baxter has been coming to year 4 to teach us how to make our own comics.

Someone came in to talk to us about dealing with bullying.

KADE: one reason is don’t just hide somewhere stand up for yourself or tell a teacher.

Salim: another reason is to stay near an adult.

In literacy we have been making our own comic strip of Henry VIII.

In numeracy we have been subtracting numbers and were only allowed to partition or use the number line method.

Some of us went to the hackney central museum to see the Tour de France trophy.

Awesome thing + Awesome thing = Awesome thing!

This was the magic formula that our Booklinks illustrator, Matt Baxter, shared with us this week.

Matt, who illustrates for the children's monthly comic The Phoenix, came into our class to share with us his work and his tips for drawing and writing comic strip stories.

We had a great time creating our own crazy characters - there were elephant boxers, teacher cheetahs and even a waiter octopus! Check out some of our sketches below!

Art next week - reminder!

Please remember to bring an old T-Shirt or shirt into school next week. We will be painting using acrylic paints which can stain, so an old shirt will protect your uniform.

Thanks!
